From Architect to Coworking Space Owner

Updated: Dec 29, 2021

How Folio is improving local communities one building at a time.

Fun fact, Dan, co-founder of Folio Offices, is also an architect. As an architect, one of Dan’s favorite aspects of creating a coworking space is finding a building with a history that could use a little TLC. His passion lies in taking an old, forgotten building, and infusing it with new life. Not only to enhance the curb appeal, but to also bring a collaborative, useful space to the community.

When searching for a location for co-working spaces, the Folio team targets downtown areas in Metro Detroit where members can enjoy a short commute, walk to local restaurants for lunch or happy hour, and integrate with the community.

BERKLEY, MICHIGAN

Folio’s first location in Berkley, Michigan was an outdated retail business. Located right on Coolidge Highway just a few blocks south of 12 Mile Road. The team knew they could transform the drab, worn out space into an invigorating environment for workers and small business owners to be creative, inspired, and productive.

When choosing the finishing touches that made this space really come to life, Dan’s goal was to inspire members to do their best work. Every light fixture, whimsical wallpaper design, and natural element was selected to promote creativity and motivation. When people walk into the space for the first time, they can already envision themselves making this their new home away from home.

FERNDALE, MICHIGAN

Set to open in July 2021, Folio Ferndale is located just a block off of N Woodward Avenue and one block north of 9 Mile Road. After sitting vacant since the mid 1980’s, the Folio team was up for the challenge of turning the eyesore into a vibrant community-driven space. The biggest accomplishment in this building is the clerestory. This completely changes the interior from a dark warehouse into a spacious, light-filled haven. Despite the building being sandwiched between two others, the clerestory floods the new office with indirect natural sunlight. Thus, giving each member the feeling of their own window.

The new Ferndale location is moving right along which means the final touches are happening now! As with the Berkley office, every single detail has been handpicked to inspire anyone and everyone who comes through the door.
