The Science Behind Why We Focus Better Around Other People

Working from home has its perks. You can wear comfortable clothes, skip the commute, and make coffee whenever you want. But if you've ever found yourself cleaning the kitchen, folding laundry, or scrolling through your phone instead of working, you're not alone.

Then something interesting happens. You go to a library, a coffee shop, or a coworking space, and suddenly you're checking things off your to-do list. You're more focused, more motivated, and somehow the day just feels easier.

So what's the difference?

It turns out there's a real reason for it.

When you're surrounded by other people who are working, your brain naturally wants to stay on task too. You don't even have to talk to anyone. Just being in a space where everyone is focused can help you stay focused as well.

Think about it. If everyone around you is answering emails, taking meetings, or working on projects, you're much less likely to spend 20 minutes watching videos on your phone. The environment helps keep you in work mode.

The opposite happens at home. Your couch reminds you to relax. The dishes remind you they need to be washed. The TV is right there, and so are all the little things you've been meaning to do. Before you know it, your workday has been interrupted five different times.

One of the best things about a coworking space is that it gives you accountability without any pressure. Nobody is watching over your shoulder or checking what you're doing. But simply being around other people who are there to work makes it easier to stay productive yourself.

A lot of people think coworking means talking and networking all day, but that's usually not the case. Most people come in, grab a coffee, say hello to a few familiar faces, and get to work. The conversations happen naturally during breaks, but the rest of the day is quiet and focused.

Your surroundings have a bigger impact on your productivity than you might think. That's why so many people have a favorite place to study, write, or work. When your brain starts to connect a certain place with getting things done, focusing becomes much easier.

If you've been struggling to stay productive at home, it might not be a lack of motivation. It could simply be that your environment is working against you.

Sometimes, a change of scenery is all it takes.

At Folio Offices, we've created a space where professionals can come in, settle down, and focus. Whether you're working for a few hours or the whole day, you'll be surrounded by people who are there for the same reason: to get their work done.

If you're curious about the difference a dedicated workspace can make, we'd love to have you visit. Book a complimentary day pass and experience it for yourself.
